So I finally got around to playing Crysis after the expansion came out. I have upgraded my graphics card in the past 6 months or so, so I figured maybe I could actually run the game on decent settings now. The game is running pretty well on my 9800GX2 with everything set on medium and a few things set on high. I don’t have Vista so I can only do the DirectX9 settings, but that’s ok since I can barely run it as it is!
The game is definitely GPU-bound but there are also some points that would benefit from having a faster hard drive, more ram and a faster CPU. I’m still using an Athlon 64 X-2 4400+ with 2GB of ram, but i’d really love to get an E-8500 or E-8600 Core 2 Duo or even one of the new processors Intel is about to release.
The game is pretty fun so far but I think the biggest complaint I have is that you don’t feel uber enough in your nano-suit. The game always showed in its trailers “maximum speed” or “maximum strength” but the juice in the nano-suit runs out so fast you can barely use any of those before you get into trouble. Also, if you don’t have maximum armor mode on and you get shot even on normal difficulty a couple of hits will kill you.
There are some great cinematic type moments in the game much like the acclaimed Call of Duty 4, but Call of Duty 4 actually runs well on many more machines and still looks quite good. I’ve heard the expansion is better and it has definitely gotten a lot better reviews, but I want to finish the first game before playing the stand-alone expansion. I’ll let you know my thoughts once I finish Crysis, hopefully sometime this weekend.
