The Fate of Tyrlon and other Dubious Things

I read the news last week that Stargate Atlantis was cancelled and was saddened because I really love the Stargate franchise and enjoyed the weekly hilarity of Dr. McKay and Col. Shepard.  The last season I watched was season 4 since I only watch shows once they come out on DVD.

Season 4 was a bit of a mediocre season as some episodes were really not that great and they really under-used Amanda Tapping’s character (Samantha Carter).  She could have been so great as part of the Atlantis cast, but she felt more like a guest star who just wasn’t given many good lines to work with.  Carter is really in her element when she is spouting off techno-babble like McKay and the conflict between them could have been really hilarious.

I’ve heard from a friend that Season 5 is actually going pretty good even though they brought Robert Picardo’s Woolsey character in as expedition leader.

The only bright note about Atlantis being cancelled is that there will be at least one direct to dvd movie and there is also a third Stargate series that Sci-Fi has greenlit called “Stargate Universe”.  This series will be much more like Star Trek in the sense that it follows the adventures of a cast stuck on an ancient ship that is going to the far reaches of the Universe.   This means the show will be mostly space-based and i’m guessing they will still occasionally find planets to do “away missions” on so they can use that Canadian forest some more :-).  While i’m sad that Atlantis went before its time, at least we aren’t going to be completely lacking in the Stargate itch-scratching department.
