At work we have several of these Dymo label makers, except I don’t actually have one in my office yet. If you’ve ever used one of these you know how simple and easy it is to print out a variety of labels to stick on various objects such as File folders, furniture, computers, keys, CD cases, your co-workers, and many other useful places. Ok, so the co-workers bit might get you in trouble, but the rest are all valid for sure!
Dymo has a lot of nice tips on their site of ways you can use the label makers during the back to school season and I can certainly think of some good uses as the University gears up again for the start of classes next week. One way that I want to use labels is to keep track of file folders and also the origin of some of the electronics equipment that isn’t actually hooked up. It is hard to remember where something came from or where it is going to be used at when it sits on your shelf for months at a time!
One daily task that I do is to work with various computers either repairing them or re-imaging them in some manner. Using a dymo label maker I could add some unique labels to the machines that would help keep track of more detailed inventory data. This would be useful since our current asset tracking system consists of just a random 5 digit number which isn’t exactly very descriptive of what model the machine is and what kind of specs it has as far as hardware.
