New Aurora Concept Browser

August 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Mozilla has this new project called Mozilla Labs where they post new ideas and request collaboration from people on developing concepts or prototypes for the idea.  One of these concept ideas is a browser called Aurora and is a look at how the idea of browsing may change in the next few years.

The idea itself seems fairly sound, but i’m still not sure on the implementation.  Some of it looked really clunky and as far as I can tell its all just a CGI mock-up at this point and no actual software exists.  The idea of using radial menus and relying on drag-n-drop has been done a lot, and sometimes you can just do things faster the old fashioned way.  It might not be as fancy but I could have shown some of the data they were using a lot quicker just using a screen sharing feature such as GoToMeeting.

My point is, sometimes trying to innovate for innovations’ sake is not necessarily a good thing.  Incremental changes to improve overall concepts is not always such a bad thing.  Sure, revolutionary ideas do come along, but how long have we been predicting the demise of the mouse as the standard interface and it is still here?
