WWDC Updates and More

June 9th, 2008 · No Comments

Looks like Apple has been working hard again and is rolling out tons of new features for the iPhone early next month. Dubbing it “iPhone 2.0″ software for the phone, it will be a free upgrade for all current subscribers.

Users of the iPod touch can purchase the software update for a nominal fee of $9.99 via the iTunes Store.

Some of the new features will include a better calculator, ability to save images, push Exchange e-mail with auto-discovery features, support for things such as 802.11x authentication and better VPN support. The iPhone 2.0 update will also let us access new custom apps that people are writing which will be available for purchase (or for free in some cases!) from the App Store which should be launched around the same time in July. This update really seems focused on making the iPhone a premier corporate device, and is definitely something that will strike fear into the hearts of Research in Motion’s shareholders since it represents a direct assault on the Blackberry’s primary market.

Before, the iPhone was more of a consumer toy because it was lacking so many features that were needed in the corporate world. Now that the iPhone will have full MS Office support and iWork support as well as all the other features mentioned above, it will be a much more functional device for corporate employees to use. I know at my own place of work a lot of people were holding off to see what Apple was going to do before jumping in.

Still nothing released from WWDC about the rumored 3G iPhone, but the keynote is still ongoing at this time. I’ll update later once we find out more.

Update: 3G iPhone is announced, even thinner, flush headphone jack (duh!), black back, metal buttons, lower price, better audio quality.  Battery times are pretty good, looks like same battery life as current-gen iPhone while using 3G, double current battery life if not using 3G feature.  New price is only $199 for 8GB 3G iPhone, $299 for 16GB version.  Now i’m going to have to start saving to upgrade.  The new iPhone releases July 11th in 22 countries.

Hmm..now to go buy some Apple stock.
