I was just thinking back to Super Mario Bros (1-3 but we’ll just ignore 2..). Super Mario Brothers featured some really high-tech innovations by the villains but also some general stupidity.
Case in point, 3 pieces of innovation in use by the villains.
In the first panel of this MS Paint masterpiece (click on it to actually see it without the distortion), we can see anti-gravity technology in use to allow enemies to walk upside down! With this innovation, Bowser should have been chasing patents instead of the Princess.
In the second panel we see invisibly-chained fire balls manipulated into discrete, circular paths. This technology has many nefarious uses, but Bowser chooses to leave them littering castles that Mario could have avoided if he had hiking boots and was willing to not follow the given path. Also, with this technology, why not make a vertical wall of fireballs, thus keeping Mario from catching up to him?
In the third panel we see a meta-morphosis inducing plant stored inside a self-sustaining life box. When consumed this plant gives you the power to spit fireballs from your hands! The uses for this are quite amazing, not the least of which is the ability to replace flint and steel with something much more cool and practical. Why would Bowser leave such an important piece of organic technology laying around waiting for some hapless bloke to stumble across it? I guess we’ll never know since these technologies were lost forever due to general incompetence on the part of villains everywhere!
