Netflix Queue and Reviews

May 20th, 2008 · 1 Comment

So its time again to list the next 4 flicks in my Netflix Queue as well as review a couple of the movies I just watched.

First off, the reviews.

Last night I was able to watch The Seeker: The Dark is Rising and also Just Cause. The Seeker was an ok movie, but it didn’t really feel like it had much life in it. I remember reading the books as a kid and being hooked but the movie just didn’t do it for me. I’d say the movie is appropriate only for 10 year olds and higher due to a few scary moments and violence, but overall it is fairly family friendly fare. I’d give it an overall rating of 5/10. Not the worst movie i’ve seen but definitely not one of the best.  One of the funny things is that the author herself apparently uses Netflix (Susan Cooper) and she was happy to see a review that said “shame shame shame on them.  I almost walked out early in tears.” where someone was trashing how badly they butchered the book.  It is never a good sign when the author can’t stand the movie based on their book, and the book series itself was a great one.

Just Cause is a fantastic movie that I think I watched a long time ago but forgot. It stars Sean Connery and also has an excellent performance by Laurence Fishburne and Ed Harris. The plot revolves around a wrongfully convicted death row inmate who enlists the help of Sean Connery’s character to try and get him freed from prison. The plot doesn’t end there though and there are a few nice twists to keep things interesting. I’d give this movie a solid 9/10 and recommend watching it. It is rated R due to language, violence, and a few disturbing images. Definitely one for the adults.

Next in my Queue:

  1. Hulk - the 2003 Ang Lee version. I actually have never seen this version except from a very early copy one of my friends had burned (it didn’t even have finished special effects). I judged the film harshly based on that copy, so i’d like to watch the real one and pass judgement on it before seeing the new Hulk next month.
  2. In the Name of the King - this will be my first Uwe Boll film since I have avoided them like the plague. I’m going into it knowing that it is going to be a terrible flick, but i’m hoping with Jason Statham in it that it will at least have a few good one-liners.
  3. Sin City - this is the Frank Miller graphic novel based movie that came out a few years ago. Several of my friends have recommended it to me so i’m going to take it for a spin and see if I like it.
  4. The Punisher - in keeping with the comic book movie theme I threw this one in since I hadn’t seen it. Netflix really lets me explore movies that I normally wouldn’t buy since I don’t want bad movies in my collection. I’m not expecting much but it should be good for some action I guess.
