I had thrown this flick in my Netflix Queue a while back and totally forgot about it. It showed up on Friday and I was able to sit down to watch it on Sunday afternoon.
The story is based on the book of the same name, which was originally published in 1977. The novel is by Katherine Paterson and Wikipedia has a good page for it here. The novel has been used in elementary school classes all over the world, but I never actually got to read it as a child and am thinking about picking the book up after seeing the movie.
The book is apparently very controversial because of some of the more adult themes it deals with such as depression and death. Without ruining too much of the story, i’ll admit that through the last third of the movie I cried a good bit. If you are more expressive of your emotions i’m sure you will as well.
At first, I thought that this was going to be typical children’s fair and was nothing more than whimsical fair for a rainy afternoon, but the last third of this movie is fantastic (and the book as well i’m sure). I highly recommend picking it up from Amazon or adding it to your Netflix queue to watch.
Be warned though, if you have younger children you will probably need to have a talk with them after this movie. Not that it is violent or anything like that, but it has some more young adult themes related to growing up and dealing with death etc.
