Age of Conan - Thoughts So Far

May 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

Granted I haven’t spent too much time in the open beta yet but I do have a few thoughts in general at this point.  I will be spending a lot more time with it tonight and tomorrow so I should be able to provide some more detailed feedback as well as some screenshots after that point.

First of all, the graphics are really awesome as many have said, but you will definitely need a pretty nice machine to run them!

My specs:
Athlon 64 X-2 4400+
2 GB DDR
Geforce 7900 GTX 512mb

My machine is probably in the top 30% of computers at this point, but it behaves more like a low-mid range machine on this game.  I don’t know if the client is still unoptimized this close to release, but I can’t imagine their being a “magic patch” or build that will occur in the next 2 weeks until launch that will resolve all of the nagging issues i’ve had so far.  Random lag, occasional crashes, memory leaks etc are all par for the course for me.  Others on the forums have stated that they have no such issues so I think it is very dependent on your exact hardware setup and whether Gods of Hyboria happen to favor you on a particular day :-).

The game-play itself seems pretty sound and I do like the combat system a lot.  I do wish that the bugs and little kinks had been mostly worked out at this point.  Many people are saying that the closed beta client is a lot more stable, but I can’t imagine why they would give the “open beta” users something that performs poorly.  That is not a very good way to sell the game to people since nearly everyone treats open beta as a free demo.  For my part I have reported 3-4 bugs already so hopefully those will get resolved before release.
