I’ve been playing some mini-games for Lord of the Rings Online, found on this website. The problem is, even though the mini-game is essentially a dumbed down version of RISK (no placement of armies, no moving of armies stuck in the back) it is still really fun. The one thing I kind of don’t like though is that attackers win ties which is contrary to every implementation of RISK or Dice Wars that i’ve ever seen. Usually being the defender of some territory gives you an inherent bonus of some sort - you know the lay of the land, you have some fixed defenses, you have good strategy for the particular area etc. The game is also multiplayer with up to 6 real humans playing against each other, or you can play single player vs. the AI.
Still, the game is very addictive and i’m ashamed to say i’ve spent hours playing it. Anyone can go there and register and play the mini-games, even if you do not have a Lord of the Rings Online subscription/account. The point of the mini-games is to unlock “deeds” much like you in the game (usually by killing X mobs, exploring Y places or using a skill a particular number of times). Once you unlock these deeds, new information is revealed about the upcoming expansion.
In other random news, StarDock announced today that Iron Clad games is working on an expansion for Sins of a Solar Empire. The game is really great and I strongly recommend picking it up, if only to support independent developers. Be warned though, it can suck away many of your precious free hours!
