Tax Time :-/

March 12th, 2008 · No Comments

I finally got around to working on my taxes some Monday night.  Man is that a depressing thing to do!

Unlike all of these other people, I always seem to OWE the IRS a bunch of money each year.  I have no clue as to why, as I thought I was withholding plenty.  In the past I have let my employers just handle that based on their payscale rates etc and how much you should withhold.  But after getting hit with a $1000+ tax bill that I can’t really afford to pay this year, I went to my payroll office today and upped my state and federal monthly tax withholdings.  I am sick of having to pay in tons of money each year because not enough is being withheld.  I also work on side projects, such as contract work, where taxes are not withheld so I have to pay the full amounts on that at the end of the year too!

I’m starting to feel the tax “burden” finally, and it really stinks.  We pay taxes to the Federal Government, the State government, the Local Government.  We pay sales taxes, we pay property taxes, we pay auto “registration” and inspection fees (hidden taxes) and pay for “licenses” for about anything you want to do (more taxes).  How many times does every dollar get taxed?  It feels like all of the taxes together add up to about 50 cents of every dollar you earn.  I don’t have any data to back that up, but it definitely is no fun unless you are super rich.  Then you can get away with more like 30 cents on every dollar because of all of the creative accounting you can get away with in our current tax system.
