Microsoft and Yahoo?

February 1st, 2008 · No Comments

Not sure what my feelings are on the news stories coming out today about Microsoft’s unsolicited offer to buy all of Yahoo’s stock, effectively acquiring them.  Granted, both of the companies together would still hold less of the search market share than Google does, but they would catch up a good bit on search volume and lessen the gap between the two entities.  Also, Yahoo is the #1 internet destination (ahead of Google!) and MSN is the #5.  Combine the two and Microsoft could then have the #1 internet destination by a fairly wide margin to Google which i’m sure Microsoft would love.  Microsoft has not been trouncing Google on anything in the last few years.

Also, another bit of current news is the ridiculous profits (again) by Exxon.  I’m not sure what my opinions are on this.  On the one hand, I want to support capitalism as I believe it is the only system that works, on the other hand, do they really need 40 BILLION dollars in profit each year?  Can they not sink more of that back into infrastructure build up and  produce more oil with that money?  Seems like Exxon should be giving a lot to charity too.  They’ve been making close to that much money each year for the past serveral years, I wonder what they are doing with it?
