Its alive….its ALIVE!

Ok, so i’m back from the dead.

I made the mistake of trying to do a manual Wordpress Upgrade to go from 2.1.2 to 2.3.2. The problem is my host which is totally awesome (Dreamhost - enter promo code TYRLON123 to receive a free lifetime domain registration) uses these cool things called “1-Click Installs”. Basically, to install Wordpress I just login to my web panel with them and click on “Install WordPress 2.3.2″ to whatever domain I want and tell them which database to use (they can create one for you automatically you just give them the name). Smash the “Go” button and about 10 minutes later they e-mail you with a link to the URL to go to to setup your admin accounts and you are off and running with a fully functional WordPress install!

Well, the issue is that year and a half ago I had installed WordPress using this 1-click installer but it had been so long that the version was no longer recognized by the system. This meant that I could not do a “1-click upgrade” using Dreamhost’s installer tools. So, when I tried to do this manual upgrade I messed up my admin side for WordPress so I couldn’t properly write posts anymore!

Luckily, I contacted my good friend Dave of Raging Tech (that i’ve mentioned before here) who happens to know a whole lot more than I ever will about WordPress. He was able to set me straight and, because he too is a Dreamhost customer, was able to help me figure out the issues I was having there as well. With a little bit of deleting, some help from Dreamhost customer support to nuke some files (.htaccess files are evil - its a long story!), and a little bit of luck I was able to get WordPress 2.3.2 up and running AND get my blog moved to my main domain. So now you are here at www.greatpcs.net instead of the silly /blog/ directory! Don’t you feel all special and happy now?

Well, no more software upgrades for me for a while, unless they make an update that allows for the liberal application of pink fluffy bunnies across the site. Hmm, maybe I can find a theme that does that…
