Universe at War Thoughts..

December 19th, 2007 · No Comments

Universe at War dropped a demo last month onto FilePlanet but I missed it due to being busy at the time. I recently read IGN’s review of the game where it scored a mostly favorable 8.0. Reminded that I had been interested in the game a few months back I downloaded the demo earlier this week and finally got to play it for a few minutes this morning. The game has a few unique aspects to it that I enjoy a lot, mainly the Hierarchy walkers. They are massive machines that have numerous hardpoints that can be outfitted with a number of different items. What is fun is that you can change the hard points any time you want (and if you have the appropriate resources of course!). This can allow you to outfit the walker to be a mobile unit spewing factory, or into a mobile massive siege warfare machine. The game employs 3 entirely different races and they are all battling it out for domination on Earth. The poor humans are just background fodder for their playground since it is actually 3 alien races that you are controlling.

One neat thing is that the races are not cloned versions of each other with different names and artwork. Each race actually plays remarkably differently which reminds me of my old favorite StarCraft! One of the races can travel really fast along energy nodes that are linked together and utilizes cheap units. Another race can disintegrate objects in the environment to reclaim resources while the Hierarchy are very mobile with behemoth units that are very expensive (and slow) to build. I’m thinking of picking the game up when i’m not broke (it is Christmas time after all!) so probably sometime in January. It also depends on how “car poor” I am going to be after getting the new car I mentioned in my last post.
